Global Vaccine Action Plan

The Global Vaccine Action Plan (GVAP) 2011-2020 was created to reduce the global health burden through improved use of existing vaccines and development of new and better vaccines to prevent greater infectious disease problems.  There were five goals including: 1) Eradicate polio2) Meet immunization coverage targets in every region, country, and community3) Exceed the Millennium Development Goal 4 target for reducing child mortality4) Meet global and regional elimination targets for diseases such as measles, rubella, and neonatal tetanus5) Develop and introduce new and improved vaccines and technologies. The GVAP set 6 targets to be met by the midterm, 2015 and only 1 of the 6 was achieved.  With support from CDC, faculty from the Emory Vaccine Center are collaborating with the Task Force for Global Health and the CDC to assess the reasons for the failure to meet the midterm targets and determine what actions can be taken to increase the potential for reaching the 2020 goals. The evaluation of implementation of the GVAP will include surveying key global stakeholders as well as select countries.  Analysis and evaluation of the results of those surveys will lead to recommendations which should help global and national leaders to determine what steps will need to be taken to achieve the 2020 GVAP goals.
